Nothing rotten in Denmark...

Forget Shakespeare. Denmark is great! The First World Conference on Sampling and Blending was held August 20-21, 2003, in Esbjerg, Denmark. The purposes were to

  • Share knowledge,
  • Meet and network with people working in different areas,
  • Honor Dr. Pierre M. Gy, founder of the Theory of Sampling (TOS), and
  • Launch the International Sampling and Blending Forum.

Over 100 participants from 16 countries attended the sessions. Fortunately for me, everything was in English, though I did have a chance to speak French with some of the attendees. A special pleasure was getting to meet Dr. Gy and hear his personal account of how he came to develop TOS. It was also a delight to give my presentation with him in the audience.

A wide variety of topics were presented in formal sessions and in poster sessions. Selected, refereed papers will appear in a special issue of Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems.

A few examples include:

  • sampling for heavy metals in municipal waste streams,
  • identification of correct and incorrect sampling equipment and experimental results,
  • seed sampling for genetically modified organisms (GMO),
  • grain sampling,
  • fish sampling,
  • blood sampling,
  • stockpile and fertilizer blending,
  • sampling overbank sediments for geochemical mapping,
  • geological and geochemical sampling,
  • importance of the analytical error, the grouping and segregation error, and heterogeneity studies,
  • metrology in sampling,
  • mass reduction for chemical analysis,
  • sampling of recovered fuel from waste,
  • NIR process sampling,

In addition to learning about these topics, I talked with people in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, and mining. I also looked at sampling equipment on display.

The next conference will be held in Brisbane, Australia, in 2005, and will be organized by the newly elected board members. I will be part of a working group to draft a document for Good Sampling Practices based on Gy's theory. More details on the Esbjerg conference and follow up activities can be found at http://www.isbf.info/index.asp.

More information about sampling equipment and procedures for solids, liquids, and gases is available in the Short Course March 6-7, 2004, in Chicago at PittCon and in the short introductory book A Primer for Sampling Solids, Liquids, and Gases, by Dr. Patricia L. Smith.
